Canada: CWB increases initial payments for barley
The CWB announced on January, 25 that 2010-11 initial payments for wheat, durum and barley will increase effective January 31, 2011.
The increase for pool A feed barley will be C$54 per tonne (to C$202 per tonne) and the increase for designated (malting) barley will be C$37.50 per tonne, putting Select CW two-row at C$225.50 and Select CW six-row at C$207.50, the CWB said.
Initial payments should not be confused with monthly Pool Return Outlooks, which are CWB estimates of farmers total returns from each pool account. Rather, initial payments represent a portion of the returns farmers can expect from the sale of their grain over the entire year.
During the crop year, the CWB regularly reviews the initial payments and recommends adjustment payments if market conditions and sales progress warrant. The Government of Canada guarantees initial payments and therefore approves the level at which they are set.
The board has also announced the initial payments for a new Pool B for 2010-11 feed barley.
The new pool, which is to cover deliveries between Feb. 1 and July 31, opens effective Feb. 1 at C$130 per tonne for No. 1 Canada Western (CW) and C$125 for No. 2 CW.
