Barley news Australia: Barley crop could total up to 8 mln tonnes this year

Australia’s barley crop had been 75% harvested by end November, H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their December report.

Local traders believe in a larger crop, close to 8 mln tonnes, of which 4.1 – 4.2 mln tonnes in Western Australia. Predictions are difficult, because an unknown share of barley fields had been cut for hay, used for grazing or totally abandoned.

The share of malting barley in W.A. has been 32% to-date. Export surplus of feed and malting barley may approach 4 mln tonnes. Rainfalls in the northeast have improved pastures and the prospects for summer crops.

ABARES forecasts a sorghum crop of 1.5 mln tonnes, slightly higher than last year. However, interstate barley shipments to New South Wales and Queensland will still be necessary, estimates are approximately 1 mln tonnes during the new crop year.

The inexplicable barley dumping investigation by China has put the new crop export program into a turmoil. Estimated malting barley sales to China of 1.2 mln tonnes were scheduled for shipments during the first few months of 2019, but are now scrambled together for arrival before January 19, when China may impose provisional deposits or import duties. Adjusted shipment programs were for loading almost 1 mln tonnes till the early days of January.

Markets had dropped by USD 30,- per tonne following the Chinese announcement, but have recovered somewhat as of early December. Feed barley was quoted USD 245,-/248,- FOB West and South, malting barley was USD 270,-/275,- in the west, but substantially higher in Victoria/South Australia.
