USA, MO: Steampunk Brew Works to close after nearly two decades in business
After nearly two decades in business, Steampunk Brew Works (231 Lamp & Lantern Village) will close as owner David Deaton retires. The Town & Country homebrew supply shop and taproom, known to regulars as The Punk, has been a cornerstone of the St. Louis beer community since 2006, St. Louis Magazine reported on September 30.
In a farewell message on social media, Deaton thanked customers and staff for their support. I had no idea what an incredible adventure awaited me, he wrote. What started as a dream quickly became something much greatera gathering place, a collaborative space, a shared story and purpose with the community I love so much.
Steampunk began as a small homebrew supply business before expanding to include a taproom. Over the years, Deaton estimates that more than 50 families who worked there went on to start breweries of their own, extending St. Louis reputation as one of the most vibrant beer cities in the country.
The business also became known for its hands-on events, such as brewing demonstrations and educational meetups with local homebrew clubs. These gatherings reflected Steampunks broader role in the community as a place where recipes were shared, beginners were welcomed, and connections were made over a pint.
Ive been inspired by your creativity, encouraged by your kindness, and reminded daily of the strength of this community, Deaton said. Truly, to everything there is a season, and this season has been one of the most rewarding of my life.
Deaton says he always knew the day would come when he would retire. Despite my joy it was inevitable that one day I would want to retire, and that time has finally arrived, he wrote.
He plans to celebrate his birthday in November with a final gathering at the taproom. I think there is enough beer left to make it to my birthday in November, he quips.
Looking ahead, Deaton hopes someone steps forward to continue operating Steampunk: In a perfect world someone, or even a group, will step forward to take over and let Steampunk Brew Works carry on, forging new memories and friendships and continue being the community-centered place that its always been.
