Brewing news Malaysia: Carlsberg Malaysia records increase in sales across three markets

The drinkers are back with a vengeance. Carlsberg Brewery recorded increases in sales across three markets – Malaysia, Singapore and even economically troubled Sri Lanka, FMT reported on February 23.

Profits also rose in tandem with the increased revenue.

The brewery attributed the significant growth in both the top line and bottom line for the financial year 2022 (FY22) to the undisrupted operations in Malaysia.

The Malaysian market led the rebound with a 43% increase in revenue to RM1.7 billion while in Singapore it was up 21.2% to RM679.9 million. Carlsberg did not include the revenue and profit data for Sri Lanka in its announcement today.

Profits from operations also rose – it was up 77.5% to RM335.3 million in Malaysia, and 54.9% to RM89.9 million in Singapore.

Overall, the brewery recorded a 36.1% increase in revenue to RM2.41 billion for all three markets combined. On a quarterly basis, the revenue recorded a year-on-year (y-o-y) increase of 13% to RM612.8 million for the fourth quarter of 2022 (4Q22).

Net profit for the year rose 57.7% to RM317 million compared with the previous financial year. However, there was a 15.8% y-o-y drop in net profit for the quarter to RM60.1 million.

The earnings per share for the quarter under review was 19.66 sen, down from 23.36 sen for the same period in 2021.

But, on an annualised basis, it rose to 103.70 sen from 65.74 sen the year before.

Carlsberg said the 29% growth in its mainstream market was contributed by its limited-edition packaging for the Chinese New Year and Harvest Festival promotions as well as its football campaigns.

The company has a 30-year partnership with the Liverpool football club.

In the premium market, sales was up 32%, helped by the introduction of a better mix and launch of the new variant Somersby Passion Fruit & Orange.

Connors Stout Porter, another premium brew, recorded the strongest sales in its category.

The highest increase in sales was recorded in the alcohol-free brews segment.

Sales were up 177% in FY22 compared with the previous year.

The brewer declared a final dividend of 25 sen per share.

At closing on February 23, Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd closed 14 sen or 0.60% higher at RM23.44 sen with a market capitalisation of RM7.17 billion.
