Barley news China: Pace of 2020/21 barley imports and early new crop purchases suggest high demand continuing in 2021/22

China’s official barley imports in 2020 were 8.080 mln tonnes, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported earlier in March.

Argentina shipped 222 thousand tonnes of barley crop 2019/20 to China last year. Crop 20/21 shipments in January to 19 February this year totalled 317 thousand tonnes, sold/to be shipped 777 thousand tonnes, most of it fair average quality (FAQ). Crop 21/22 sold for December-January shipment is 300 thousand tonnes. Total sales amount to 1.4 mln tonnes. China is in the market for additional old and new crop barley.

Canada reports shipments of 2.2 mln tonnes of barley to China and forecasts a total of 3.0 mln tonnes by the end of July. New crop sales are 1.5 mln tonnes.

France shipped 1.76 mln tonnes to China to-date. New crop sale are estimated between 2.0 and 2.2 mln tonnes.

Ukraine shipped 2.64 mln tonnes to China in July/January. All feed barley. Total barley exports by February 18 were 3.8 mln tonnes, their surplus is exhausted.

Uruguay is reported to have loaded 35,000 tonnes of barley destined for China and expects to sell up to 100,000 tonnes during 2020/21.
So far 7.2 mln tonnes of barley have been shipped to China, further deliveries of 2.5 mln tonnes are expected till the end of campaign. Reported new crop sales are 4.0 mln tonnes.

The early new crop purchases (not only in barley) are an indication that China’s large purchase activities will continue in 2021/22, the Gauger analysts said. Private forecasters predict: 10 mln tonnes of barley, 10 tonnes of sorghum, 30 mln of corn, 108 mln tonnes of soybeans.
