Brewing news Brazil: Number of breweries up 6.8% in 2023

The number of breweries in Brazil saw a 6.8% increase in 2023 to 1,847, Vitoria News reported, citing the latest Anuario da Cerveja published by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock.

According to Marcio Maciel, executive president of the National Syndicate of the Beer Industry (Sindicerv), the nation’s brewing industry accounts for 2% of the gross domestic product and 2.5 mln jobs in Brazil.

The report showed that the increase in the number of brewing companies was also accompanied by an increase in registered brands – from 42,831 in 2022 to 45,648 last year.

Brazil’s beer import has been decreasing since 2019. Between 2022 and 2023 the volume imported dropped by 51.1%. The ministry attributes the declining imports to an increased domestic offer of beer.

Export, however, continued to grow, the report said, noting that in 2022 the increase was 18.6%.

The state of Sao Paulo is home to the highest number of breweries in Brazil, counting 410 companies, followed by Rio Grande do Sul.
