Barley news EU & UK: Barley crop forecast for 2023 mostly unchanged

In crop 2023, the EU-27 & UK production is mostly unchanged, down slightly to 59.51 mln tonnes, but 0.72 mln tonnes over crop 2022, RMI Analytics said in their latest report.

The marginal increase in production is driven by Spain, France (6RW), and Hungary increasing and offsetting the expected production declines in Denmark and Germany.

The weather remains positive for planting 2 row spring varieties which are ahead of schedule, but soil moisture levels are low. France’s winter crop is rated 92% ‘Good to Excellent’ but the crop is starting to show signs of stress (e.g. yellowing).

Prices are mixed with crop 2022 steady to lower, while crop 2023 is higher. Farmers are busy planting and having already sold a portion of crop 2023 (at higher levels) are not selling further at current (lower) prices.

Danish and UK prices are firmer as demand remains present as maltsters continue to buy small lots.
