USA, AR: Flyway Brewing Company to take over High Cotton Brewing Co. and the former Edge Alley restaurant space

Things are brewing in the Edge District.

Flyway Brewing Company, a North Little Rock-based brewery, will take over the existing High Cotton Brewing Co. and the former Edge Alley restaurant space on Monroe Avenue, The Commercial Appeal reported on February 22.

Flyway and the ownership group behind City Silo are leading the brewpub’s expansion into Memphis. High Cotton President Ross Avery will have an ownership stake in the new venture, too.

Flyway is a 10-barrel microbrewery near the banks of the Arkansas River, in the heart of the Argenta Arts District of North Little Rock, Arkansas. Signature beers include its Bluewing Berry Wheat Ale.

“High Cotton’s contributions and innovations to Memphis' brewing scene are invaluable, and we will continue that legacy,” said Scott Tashie, owner and founder of City Silo. “We're committed to celebrating the staple brews that hold significance within our community and are proud to continue serving the crowd-favorite High Cotton Mexican Lager, among others.”

The existing brewery and taproom will undergo a renovation and expansion under its new ownership, offering a mix of the two breweries’ diverse selections.

“Memphis has a vibrant beer scene with a growing number of breweries and beer enthusiasts who appreciate the artistry and creativity that goes into brewing unique, flavorful beers,” said Matt Foster, Flyway Brewing founder and co-owner. “We are excited to be a part of this thriving community and look forward to collaborating with local restaurants and bars as we expand Flyway’s presence in the area.”

The transition will be gradual, designed to ensure minimal disruption to patrons. Expect to first see Flyway brews on the lineup in the taproom, and eventually some High Cotton offerings will be scaled back, most likely leaving fan favorites Riverking IPA, Mexican Lager and Scottish Ale.

“We started with no idea of how to run a brewery business, only a passion for brewing the best craft beer we could,” said Avery. “And I think, ultimately, we did. Now it’s time for a new direction, along with a new range of brews catering to a wider variety of tastes. And that’s pretty exciting.”

In addition to an extensive selection of signature brews, plans include a menu of food options and a new music and event space.

“We are very excited to activate the music venue at High Cotton,” added Tashie. “Memphis has such a rich history embedded in its music, and we are thrilled to be able to contribute to that.”

“We deeply admire Edge Alley's history and the impact it had on the revitalization and resulting liveliness of the Edge District,” added Trey Dacus, City Silo partner and Director of Operations. “The opportunity arose to create a new concept in the beautifully designed space, and we are thrilled to bring Flyway to Memphis, while also expanding a state-of-the-art brewing facility and taproom into an event space.”

A grand opening date has yet to be announced.
