EU: Germany’s barley malt production slightly up in July/May
Germany’s barley malt production in July 2019-May 2020 amounted to 1.726 mln tonnes vs. 1.721 mln in the same period last season, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported earlier in September.
Barley malt production was exceptionally high before the outbreak of the Covid crisis, but dropped in April/May, the analysts said.
Wheat malt output over the same period was 142 thousand tonnes vs. 163 thousand a year ago. Wheat malt production was lower all year round following the trend of wheat beer.
France barley usage was 1.444 mln tonnes in 2018/19, 1.310 mln in 2019/20 (-9.4%), and the estimate for 2020/21 is 1.420 mln tonnes (+8.5%).
U.K. barley usage in June totalled 117 thousand tonnes (- 29% vs June 2019), and 1.769 mln tonnes in July 2019 – June 2020 (-6.4%). While the loss of beer sales may amount to 15% in 2020, distillers will almost produce at full capacity and require 800 to 850 thousand tonnes of malt, the Gauger analysts believe.
