Barley news EU: Virtually no activity reported in barley crop 2024

European barley markets are relatively quiet with virtually no activity remaining in crop’24, and only limited trade in crop’25 (although demand has recently shown up for new crop), RMI Analytics said in their latest report.

Wide movements in currencies are attributed to the US tariff disruption, but nonetheless add to market uncertainty. In nominal terms, Creil prices are down slightly in both crop’24 and crop‘25, while Mosel prices are mixed.

In crop’24, the spread between 2RS and 6RS has narrowed to only EUR 5/tonne, with feed barley prices supported also.

Denmark is also reporting a good early pace to crop’25 seeding which is pushing prices downward but the decline is more than offset by the stronger EUR/USD exchange rate (same for UK). Some feed barley demand into Belgium and Netherlands has been reported, but for malting barley, the market remains very quiet. Lower crop’24 values may prompt traders to buy old crop and store into crop’25.
