China: January – July barley imports total 6.4 mln tonnes with little malting barley

China imported 6.4 mln tonnes of barley in January – July this year, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported earlier in October.

Shipments to China (not arrivals) from July till end September/early October are approximately 4.7 mln tonnes.

Barley arrivals in China this year included precious little malting barley. Open contracts include approximately 1.0 mln tonnes from Canada, 0.9 mln tonnes from France, 1.4 mln tonnes of new crop barley from Argentina.

As the import program is very large, the Chinese (feed) barley demand is well covered for 2021. It is wide open for next year.

Chinese maltsters, the major victims of the Australian barley boycott, have become used to selecting maltable barleys from FAQ and feed barley arrivals. During January – September 2022 only Argentina and France can deliver real malting barley.
