World: Barley trade, production forecasts increased in USDA’s December report

World barley trade forecast for 2020/21 has been increased this month to 28.933 mln tonnes this month versus 27.778 mln in the November report, USDA said on December 10.

Export forecasts are up for Australia (+600 thousand tonnes to 5 mln tonnes) and Canada (+300 thousand tonnes to 3 mln tonnes). Import forecast is up for China (+500 thousand tonnes to 7 mln) and Saudi Arabia (+300 thousand tonnes to 7.6 mln).

In 2019/20, world barley trade is estimated at 28.364 mln tonnes.

Barley production is forecast to total 157.181 mln tonnes in 2020/21 (156.38 mln tonnes in the November report, 156.87 mln in 2019/20), with numbers up for Australia (+500 thousand tonnes to 11 mln), Canada (+341 thousand tonnes to 10.741 mln) and down for the EU (63.4 mln tonnes versus 63.5 mln forecast last month).

World barley consumption is seen at 156.798 mln tonnes (156.123 mln in the November report, 155.032 mln in 2019/20) and ending stocks are forecast at 19.967 mln tonnes (20.08 and 19.584 mln tonnes, respectively).
