Brewing news USA, NY: Port Jeff Brewing Company to close its doors by the end of the year

Port Jeff Brewing Company, a longtime staple of Long Island’s craft beer scene, will close its doors by the end of the year, owner Mike Philbrick confirmed on November 26 to Greater Long Island.

Philbrick, who has operated the brewery and taproom for the past 15 years, said the decision comes as both the craft beer landscape and the economy have shifted.

“It made a lot of sense to just move on before we get to a spot where we really have to make a tough decision,” he said.

For Philbrick, what he’ll miss most isn’t the beer itself but the community that built up around it.

“It’s been a staple in Port Jefferson. The music events, the gatherings, the milestones — people met their husbands here, their wives here. There are just so many connections,” he said.

Philbrick said most patrons have been “incredibly supportive” of his decision.

The brewery will remain open through the holidays, including its annual Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning and during the town’s upcoming Dickens Festival. Philbrick anticipates hosting a final closing event some time in December.

After closing, Philbrick plans to step away from the brewery business and return to “a civilian life,” he said with a smile. He has six children, including a 17-year-old quarterback Hudson Philbrick at Ward Melville High School — who is playing Friday at noon at Hofstra against Massapequa for the Long Island Division I championship.

The opportunity to spend more quality time with his family played mightily into his decision. He also hinted he may return to work in music or sales, fields he was active in before opening the brewery.

“Having it come to an end is bittersweet,” Philbrick said. “It’s time. We hit our peak a few years ago, and I’m happy with what we’ve done. Chapter closed.”
