EU & UK: EU and UK maltsters affected by the crisis more than other continents
Brewers, maltsters and trade met for the first time since three years at the Drinktec in Munich. The atmosphere was strongly affected by the war in the Ukraine, inflation, the lack of energy and fear of a strong recession, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported earlier in October.
For EU maltsters the cost of energy has risen to €150-180 per tonne of malt; the worst was €250-280, but gas prices have presently receded from their highs. Some brewers are afraid of a stop of CO2 deliveries from fertilizer industries. The cost of transport inside the EU has increased due to constant low water levels and high freight premiums in the EU river system; also the lack of rail and truck transport availability.
Further price rises cannot be excluded, not even a stop of gas supplies to the brewing and malting industries in winter. Production stops would endanger the existence of many independent brewers, maltsters, plus the whole chain from barley farmers to retailers and catering services, the analysts said.
The EU and UK are more affected by the crises than other continents. For fear of lesser beer sales some EU brewers remain deliberately short against their normal malt demand in 2023.
