Vietnam is one of the world’s top 10 beer producing and consuming nations, well above France, Spain, Italy and India. It ranks 3rd in Asia, after China and Japan. Beer is by far the most popular alcoholic drink in Vietnam, with an annual turnover of more than 5 billion US$ in 2022, accounting for about 74% of the total annual alcoholic drinks market.
Vietnamese people have developed a distinct beer culture in which beer (bia in Vietnamese) plays an important role in socialization, as well as in relaxing and contemplating. Craft brewing is booming along with the entire Vietnamese economy and its tourism sector. Craft beer recipes in Vietnam can get especially original and exotic with the inclusion of locally produced ingredients like buckwheat, beetroot, lemongrass, passion fruit, and even coffee and cocoa.

The abhorrent, devastating war in Ukraine is approaching its 600th day with a scale of devastation not seen in Europe since the end of World War II. And yet, the Ukrainian people demonstrate awesome resilience and try to lead as normal a life as possible, despite enormous human loss, pain, destruction and disruption.
The 11th Forum of brewers, distillers, and beverage producers, that took place in Lviv on September 7-8 is a palpable demonstration of this astonishing spirit of defying resilience against all odds, that penetrates the entire Ukrainian society since February 2022. Ukrainians themselves call it “незламність” (nezlamnist) in their highly expressive language. Having been dragged into a brutal war situation, in which winning is the only way to survive, they strive to learn how to win in any aspect of their life, brewing included!
At Castle Malting, we feel immensely proud, that we were there, standing with the Ukrainian people in their fight to create and thrive in this “new normal”, which the war brought about.
Ukrainian brewing industry after the shock of coronavirus “new normal” is learning to cope with another by far more challenging situation: war.
What Ukrainians bravely demonstrate these days, their admirable “спрага до перемоги” (spraga do peremogi, which literally means thirst after victory) is an invaluable lesson for everybody of us, applying to personal life, business, civic engagement and responsibility!
Let us hope that next year’s forum will occur in conditions of enduring peace!

Dear Customer and Partner,
For almost 20 years, we have been working hard to develop and provide you with the highest quality malts in the world.
While the beginning was rocky, we always believed in our ability to provide an excellent service and today we are the global leader in our industry, exporting over 100 types of malt to over 3600 breweries and distilleries in 145 countries.
Currently, we are at the top of our game and are dedicated to providing the best service possible to our main customer base which is at the heart of our malting activities: small and medium-sized breweries.
Unfortunately, over the past two years we have found that, more and more frequently, we have not been able to consistently provide the level of service you deserve, due to a lack of malt production capabilities.
We had to decide whether to continue as before or to be honest with ourselves and maintain the high level of service you have come to enjoy from us over the years.
Given this dilemma, we have decided to form a partnership with the Malteries Soufflet – InVivo group, a global leader in the malting industry, as the most logical solution.
I fully understand that some of you may be concerned about what the future holds. I want to reassure you that a key aspect of this partnership is that the Malteries Soufflet – InVivo group will preserve our factories, our structure, and our core values intact, and is committed to maintaining our close and personalized relationships with each of you.
The entire team of Castle Malting will remain in place and will continue to serve you as before, and even better thanks to the support of our new partner.
As for me, I will stay with the company for as long as necessary, in order to ensure the smoothest possible transition with the Soufflet team so that Castle Malting continues to serve you the best.
I would like to express my gratitude to all of you who have placed your trust in me and Castle Malting over the years, and who have joined me on this journey. Your trust and loyalty are greatly appreciated.
We are very proud to have contributed to the success of craft brewing by offering a comprehensive service to make life easier for each of you.
Good continuation and success for all.
Jean Louis Dourcy

Thanks to the determination and kindness of our team, we have helped 106 Ukrainian refugees to start a new life in Belgium, far away from the terror and destruction ravaging their motherland.
Two busses, two weeks on the road, border controls that seemed they would never end, sleepless nights, exhaustion and yet - happiness, smiles, gratitude and hope - it was all worth the effort. The youngest refugee that travelled with us was barely a few-month-old baby, the oldest one was a 83-year-old grandmother. And what a joy it was to see the sparkle of hope in everybody’s eyes once we reached our destination. They are all in Belgium now living with local host families and receiving ample assistance from the local community. They have a roof above their heads and they have started a peaceful life. All children have access to local schooling.
Our reward is an incredible and fulfilling sense of accomplishment.
Our Brewmaster Simon Brandt was delighted to offer the gold medal to the winner of the best Dutch Beer during the Brussels Beer Challenge - Davo Bordo from Davo Bieren Bv.
Congratulations Davo Bieren Bv on your accomplishment! We wish you great success in all your future projects. May all your brewing dreams come true!

SafSour LB-1 is a heterofermentative lactic acid bacteria. It has the ability to provide a precise acidity related to the combined production of lactic and acetic acids.
SafSour LB-1 also reveals a neutral aromatic profile, respecting the aromatic signature of the yeast in the final product. We recommend it to produce Gose, Berliner Weisse and many other balanced sour beers.
Feel free to add it to your next order!
Castle Malting Team is happy to announce the launch of 3 new varieties of flakes that are available on our website!

Château Special B® is a historic type of malt that has its origins in Belgium and stands behind a wide range of famous Belgian beers. "B" means Belgium and in order to define it, Castle Malting® has decided to opt for Château Special Belgium®.
With a new name, but with the same unique flavor and aroma, Château Special Belgium® is a very special Belgian dark malt, produced by Castle Malting® using a specific double roasting process.
We are pleased to announce you the launch of SafAle BE-134, the new yeast strain for Belgian Saison-style beers!
This typical yeast strain available within our product portfolio is recommended for brewing belgian Saison-style beers and is characterized by a particularly high attenuation (more than 90%). It develops fruity aromas with a spicy character such as clove notes. This strain will produce highly refreshing and drinkable beers.
"BE" refers to the country of Belgium and its wide variety of beers; “134” is a yeast strain code which refers to the product range.
Safbrew™ BE-134 is available in stock now. Do not forget to include it into your next order!
Features: Belgian wheat chocolate malt. Malted wheat is roasted at 230°C and then quickly cooled when the desired color is reached.
Characteristics: Château Wheat Chocolate malt is a highly roasted malt, though not as high as black malt. With the help of this malt a deep brown color with hints of black coffee and bittersweet chocolate flavor can be achieved in beer. The wheat version of Chocolate malt has a more pronounced dark chocolate character compared to its barley counterpart. This malt adds color and flavor to a wide variety of dark beer styles and is used to smooth out certain English-style dark beers, such as stouts, porters, or brown ales.
Château Wheat Chocolat is husk free and was especially developed by Castle Malting to avoid astringency, bitterness and dry flavor or aftertaste in beers. This malt can replace in a proportion of 1:1 the de-husked* chocolate malt, imparting a smoother flavor.
*De-husked (or debittered) chocolate or black barley malts are dark roasted malts with most of the husk removed prior to roasting. However, since it is not possible to remove the entire quantity of the husk and it is namely because of the husk that bitter notes develop during roasting, debittered roasted malts will contribute a certain amount of bitter, astringent and dry flavors or aftertaste to your beer.
From golden pilsners and brown ales to the strong Trappist brews produced in monasteries, Belgian beer is enjoyed all around the world. Drink’s history stretches back centuries to medieval monks. And today, enthusiasts say the beer diversity in Belgium is unequalled anywhere else in the world.
On November 30th 2016 Belgium’s Beer Culture was recognized by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, officially designating it as something that should be preserved for future generations.
The history and broad variety of brews available make Belgium's beer industry stand out from other brewing traditions around the world.
What is special to the Belgian beer culture is the combination of variety, innovation and tradition. There are more than 3,000 different beers in Belgium, more than 200 breweries and these breweries have created around them a unique beer culture.
Belgian beer is renowned throughout the world for its wide array of tastes, from extremely sour to bitter, brewed in numerous cities, towns and villages across the west European nation of 11 million people.
“It is the unparalleled diversity of the art of brewing and the intensity of the beer culture, as a part of our daily lives and at festivals in our country, that make this beer culture a part of the identity and the cultural heritage of the entire country,” as per statement of the culture ministers of Belgium.
There are more and more countries developing their beer industry with more variation, and they always refer to the Belgian beer styles. We are proud that Belgian Beers serve as a solid point of reference and are a source of inspiration to the beer industry and for the beer related activities in the rest of world.
To satisfy the quality requirements of this enormous variety of beers, Belgian malting company Castle Malting has developed an entire spectrum of premium base and specialty malts. The unique properties of Belgian malts are essential to all famous Belgian beer styles, just as much as the unique brewing processes.
All the recipes proposed on our website hereafter are based on some famous Belgian Beers and will be ideally brewed with the top quality Belgian Malts by Castle Malting.
These recipes are intended to be a starting point for your inspiration and you are quite welcome to add your own touch to make your beer even more special.
