Brewing news Germany: Beer sales up 0.6% in last six months

Germans love beer at the best of times, but they are drinking even more this summer, with the hot weather and the football World Cup driving up sales, The Local Germany reported on July 30.

Beer sales rose by 0.6 percent in the last six months, according to figures released by the Federal Office of Statistics on July 30.

That means that the Germans have consumed around 30 million more litres of beer in the last half a year than they did in the six months before that.

The increase in beer consumption has been put down to both the current heatwave and the football World Cup which took place earlier this summer.

It has been a scorching summer in Germany so far, with temperatures repeatedly exceeding 30 degrees.

In total, breweries have sold around 4.7 billion litres of beer in the last six months. Most of that was sold within the domestic market, though the industry also recorded an increase in exports.
