Brewing news USA, GA: Wild Heaven to open new brewery in Atlanta

The Atlanta beer scene will be adding to its’s growing numbers following Wild Heaven’s announcement that it plans on opening a second brewery and taproom location at the Lee + White development along the Atlanta Beltline, Patch.com reported on March 27.

Located adjacent to the Beltline Westside Trail, “Wild Heaven Westside” will consist of more than 21,000 square feet of space, including a large area overlooking the Atlanta Beltline that will enable patrons to enjoy being outdoors while sipping beer and nibbling food made onsite. The facility is slated to open in first half of 2018, according to a company release.

“We plan to create an incredible beer and food destination in an area of Atlanta whose time has come,” said Wild Heaven President Nick Purdy in a statement. “Beyond that, this facility provides space for our ongoing growth and expansion.”

Wild Heaven Brewmaster Eric Johnson said the company’s new investment of greater than $5 million will make overall operations run smoother and more efficient.

“We’ll start with a 15-barrel brewhouse allowing production of new beers plus smaller-run beers from our lineup, followed by a 60-barrel system that will take over production of our mainline beers,” he said in a statement. “Then our Avondale Estates facility can become focused on sour and barrel-aged beer production.”

The company’s decision to expand follows the change in Georgia’s beer law to now allow for direct sale of beer by Georgia breweries to consumers onsite.

Wild Heaven, a Georgia brewery founded by Purdy and Johnson in Avondale Estates, is best known for its popular Emergency Drinking Beer. But Johnson said he is already planning a taproom lineup that will include variants on core Wild Heaven beers, as well as a stream of new experimental and taproom-only beers.

Wild Heaven’s year-round portfolio includes Emergency Drinking Beer, Wise Blood IPA, White Blackbird Belgian-style Saison, Invocation Belgian-style Golden Ale and Ode to Mercy Nitro Coffee Brown Ale.

The company’s beers can be found throughout Georgia and Eastern Tennessee.

“Eric and I can’t wait to get to know our new neighbors and find ways to serve the West End, Adair Park and surrounding communities,” Purdy said in the statement. “There is a lot of effort ahead of us, including working with the neighboring communities and the city to ensure our vision is helpful and appropriate.”
