Brewing news UK: Supermarket chain to market Caledonian Brewing Company’s beer

Waitrose, the supermarket chain set to open two stores in Edinburgh in June 2006, has strengthened its ties with Scottish suppliers after agreeing a deal with the city-based Caledonian Brewing Company, Evening News posted on May 08.
From May 22, three Caly products - Deuchars IPA, Caledonian 80 Shilling and organic ale Golden Promise - will be available at selected Waitrose branches south of the Border.
The supply agreement will also see the three lines stocked by the group's two Capital stores, which are poised to open in Comely Bank Road and Morningside Road at the start of June.
Waitrose already stocks a number of individual Scottish beer brands, and the new deal with Caledonian - the value of which has not been disclosed - will take the total tally to 40.
Caledonian, which was originally founded in 1869, is the sole survivor of the 40-plus breweries that operated in Edinburgh during the 1800s.
Two years ago, the famous Slateford Road site was purchased by Scottish & Newcastle, following the brewing giant's decision to close its Fountainbridge operation, although the brands were retained by the Caledonian Brewing Company (CBC).
At the same time, CBC - in which S&N has a 30 per cent stake - secured the contract to manage the brewery with the addition of the McEwans range of ales.
Marie Moser, marketing manager at CBC, said she was delighted the local brewery would be supplying Waitrose branches with three of its key lines, and noted the change in purchasing policy at the big grocery chains in recent times.
"If you go back about 20 years when the English-based supermarkets started coming to Scotland, they very famously would just bring whatever they sold down south. There is a history of having to learn.
"The Waitrose ethos is for very high quality products and natural ingredients, and we made the world's first organic beer with Golden Promise."
She added that the brewery was growing at about 20 per cent per annum.
The agreement between Waitrose and Caledonian comes on the back of the supermarket's "meet the buyer" days held in conjunction with Scottish Food and Drink in March.
Waitrose - the food retailing arm of the John Lewis Partnership - has a strong reputation for sourcing produce from local and regional areas.
Steve Wallace, the firm's buyer for beers and cider, said: "The Caledonian Brewery has a strong heritage and affiliation with the people of Edinburgh.
"The three beers are a great addition to our range and we believe their high quality - good aromas, consistency and colour - will appeal to Waitrose customers nationally.
"As a result, not only will we be stocking the brands in our new Edinburgh stores when they open, but they will be available at a number of our branches nationwide."
