Brazil: Petrpolis Group promotes hop growing in Brazil
Brazil is not traditionally a hop-producing country, as the crop requires cooler climatic conditions like those in the United States and Germany, which together account for more than 70 percent of global production. Despite this, the Petrópolis Group decided to take the first step in Rio de Janeiro with the experimental planting of 400 seedlings of 10 different varieties to test their adaptability, FreshlyBottled.com reported on September 2.
The first harvests showed that some species thrived, and the technical team began selecting varieties with greater adaptability to Brazilian soil and climate.
The natural evolution of the project led to its expansion to Uberaba, Minas Gerais, in 2023, where 6,000 seedlings of the Comet and Cascade varieties were planted on two hectares. The company has cultivation areas in the regions of Teresópolis, Rio de Janeiro, and Uberaba. According to data from the Brazilian Association of Producers (Aprolúpulo), Minas Gerais has the largest cultivated area, while Rio de Janeiro was the state with the fastest growth.
