World: Barley prices steady to lower across the world

World barley prices are steady to lower, depending on the region, RMI Analytics said in their January report.

Canada and Argentina are holding firm on pricing due to strong domestic feed demand, and a poorer crop result, respectively.

Australia’s delivery of another large barley (and wheat) crop is leading the downward move in prices, as the region continues to provide the most competitive global barley pricing. French prices are following to the downside but to lesser degree, driven in large part by weaker European wheat prices and the continued operation of the Ukraine ‘grain corridor’ (for now at least).

World barley prices have a weaker tone as the new year begins. Maltsters and brewers are well covered from crop 2022, and to a lesser degree in crop 2023, leaving limited demand in the market.

In France, there is very little malting barley price spread between crop 2022 and 2023, new crop holding rather firm in comparison to old crop.

China remains a central topic of discussion across the market with a possible resolution of the Australian barley import tariff in the works, and the smaller Argentina crop raising questions about where China goes to replace the lost Argentine barley volume.
