World: Barley trade forecast for 2022/23 slightly up in USDA’s first report of this year

Global barley trade is forecast to total 29.561 mln tonnes in 2022/23, USDA said in its monthly report, revising upwards its December forecast of 29.486 mln tonnes. Volume traded in 2021/22 is estimated at 28.515 mln tonnes.

The EU is expected to export 6 mln tonnes vs. 6.3 mln tonnes forecast last month (6.362 mln tonnes in 2021/22). The forecast for the UK is now 1.2 mln tonnes versus 850,000 forecast in USDA’s December report. Barley import forecast is up for the EU (1.5 vs. 1.1 mln tonnes in the December report) and reduced for Morocco, the Philippines, and Tunisia.

World barley production is seen at 149.465 mln tonnes, just slightly down from the December forecast of 149.53 mln tonnes but significantly up from 145.469 mln tonnes harvested in 2021/22.

Total consumption is forecast at 149.908 mln tonnes (vs. 149.742 mln tonnes forecast in December and 148.084 mln tonnes estimated for 2021/22) and ending stocks at 17.735 mln tonnes (17.908 and 18.178 mln tonnes, respectively).
