EU: France’s winter barley plantings reported at 1.25 mln ha

November weather was too warm in Europe, much too dry in most parts of the Mediterranean, allowing for timely plantings of winter grains. At the turn of December winter started in North and East Europe. Snow cover was minimal, but also no concern about any winter damage, H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their December report.

France reports plantings of 1.25 mln ha of winter barley with a share of 60% of Faro, the malting variety. Spring barley plantings will total 650 thousand ha, of which 200 thousand ha were already seeded in fall.

Germany’s spring barley plantings are forecast at 364 thousand ha for a production of 1.9 mln tonnes; only 20 thousand ha spring barley varieties were seeded in autumn. The six-row winter barley Faro is gaining some ground in Germany, but its share is still insignificant.
