Barley news Canada: Barley crop expected to amount to 9.987 mln tonnes - StatsCan

StatsCan production report of December, 2 forecasts the nation’s barley crop at 9.987 mln tonnes (6.959 in 2021 and 10.741 mln tonnes in 2020), H. M. Gauger GmbH reported earlier this month.

Last year barley exports of 2 mln tonnes, sold before the crop calamity was known, had deprived the domestic market of needed supplies; Canada had to import 6.5 mln tonnes of Yellow Corn from the U.S. and a few cargoes of malting barley from Denmark and Australia.

After this year’s ample harvest barley stocks of feed lots were refilled, and market prices in Alberta rose to US$375/tonne before settling at US$355 at the end of November.

2022 growing and harvest conditions in the Prairies were favorable, therefore Canadian maltsters enjoy a good quality barley selection of 3.3 mln tonnes. New crop exports, 800 thousand tonnes till end November, at least 90% to China, include little malt barley.
