Barley news Australia: Apparent understanding with China gives hope for revoking ban on Australia barley imports

An apparent better understanding between China and the new Australian government led to the expectation that China would allow barley imports from Australia again, but so far no announcement has been made of an adjustment or cancellation of the penalty tax, H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their December report.

Improved, drier weather in the east has pushed harvest and deliveries into high gear. The latest receival numbers of all grains: CBH (west) 6.93 mln tonnes, GrainCorp (east) 3.04 mln tonnes, Viterra (south) 1.2 mln tonnes. Forecasts are still for a barley crop at or above 14 mln tonnes. One recent crop estimate comes from PIRSA: South Australia will collect 2.886 mln tonnes of barley, whereas ABARES had only expected 2.034 mln.

The selection of malting barley will be affected in the country except the west; rains and floods have taken their toll. But there will be enough good quality barley for the domestic and export market. Just in case: China buys the cheapest qualities, FAQ and feed, the analysts said.

Exports in the crop year October-September 2021/22 were 875 thousand tonnes of malting barley: main receivers were Mexico with 317 thousand tonnes imported, Vietnam with 187 thousand and Peru with 98 thousand. Feed barley shipments were 7.2 mln tonnes, the largest destinations Saudi Arabia with 3.18 mln and Japan with 1.07 mln tonnes.

Malting barley specifications in Australia are very specific. It is therefore likely that large malting barley exports took place under the label of feed barley, e.g. to Canada, Latin American and Asian destinations, the analysts said.
