World: Barley trade forecast slightly down in USDA’s December report

Global barley trade is forecast to reach 29.486 mln tonnes in 2022/23, the USDA said in their December report, as compared to 29.576 mln tonnes forecast last month.

The forecast for Australia’s barley exports is up 300 thousand tonnes this month, at 7.5 mln. Argentina’s barley shipments are now only expected to total 2.7 mln tonnes in 2022/23, down from 3 mln forecast in November.

2021/22 barley trade is forecast at 28.515 mln tonnes.

Global barley production is seen at 149.53 mln tonnes this month, up from 149.002 mln forecast in November and a significant improvement on the 2021/22 crop of 145.468 mln tonnes, the USDA said.

Total consumption is forecast at 149.742 mln tonnes (149.227 mln forecast for 2022/23 in November, 148.141 mln tonnes forecast for 2021/22), and ending stocks at 17.908 mln (17.896 and 18.12 mln tonnes, respectively).
