Barley news EU: Northern, central Europe fares well, winter and spring grains affected by drought in France, Mediterranean, Balkan countries

This year’s European drought supposedly is the worst since hundreds of years. MARS, the Joint Research Centre of the EU, predicts substantially lower yields of summer crops than last year, maize minus 16%, soybeans minus 15% and sunflower minus 12%. Pastures are severely stressed, the outlook for potato and sugar beet crops is poor, H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their September report.

The countries worst off are parts of France and all Mediterranean and Balkan countries. Winter and spring grains were affected in these regions.

The centre of the continent harvested good winter barley and fair spring barley crops. Austria, Czech Republic, Poland fared better than last year.

Northern Europe, i.e. Ireland, Britain, the Baltic States and Scandinavia, which experienced crop failures in 2021, collect very good barley crops this year.
