Brewing news World: Leading brewers, beer producing nations see recovering volumes with variable numbers

AB InBev sold 289 mln hl in the 1st half of 2022, plus 3.1% y/y. Ambev Brazil produced record sales of 42.2 mln hl in the 2nd quarter, a plus of 6.1% y/y, H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their latest report earlier in August.

Chinese beer output totalled 41.9 mln hl in June, plus 6.4% y/y; January-June volume was 184.4 mln hl, minus 2.0% y/y.

German beer sales June 8.74 mln hl, minus 7.1% y/y, Jan/June 43.28 mln hl, plus 3.8% y/y. Domestic sales January-June were up by 6.4%, exports down 7.0%. Total sales are still 5.5% lower than in January-June 2019.

Heineken’s world beer sales totalled 127 mln hl in the first half of 2022 - plus 7.6% y/y

Japan’s brewers estimate their January-June to have increased by 3% y/y, the first increase since 10 years; but sales are still 10% below 2019. Asahi reported a 15% y/y increase in sales in value terms, Kirin saw a minus of 4% in volume terms, Suntory and Sapporo each plus 3% (volume). Brewers target up to 10% increases for the whole year.

In NL Times and De NL Brouwers report first-half 2022 beer sales almost 13% higher than in 2021 and even 1.5% up from 2019.

Romanian January-April beer sales declined by 10% y/y, the volume data is not available at the moment.

U.S. domestic l.p. beer sales totalled 16.0 mln bbls. in June, minus 3.3%, January-June volume was 82.9 mln bbls., minus 3.7% y/y.

U.S. beer imports reached 3.52 mln bbls. in May, minus 0.6%; January-May volume imported was 16.586 mln bls., plus 6.1% y/y, of which from Mexico 13.15 mln bbls., plus 15.7% y/y.

As shown above, beer sales are recovering from pandemic times, with variable numbers around the world. Sales profit from the end of lockdowns, the warm summer weather, the opening of travel and hospitality (beer gardens); but there is also inflation, high prices of malt, transport and energy, and the risk of shut gas supplies and return of a massive corona wave.
