Barley news Australia: Barley acreage and production expected to be smaller in 2022/23

Rabobank analysts expect a smaller barley acreage and production in 2022/23, 4.09 mln ha, minus 6.7%, and 11.0 mln tonnes, minus 18% y/y, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported earlier in June.

Plantings by states are reported as follows: New South Wales 848 thousand ha, minus 6%; South Australia 834 thousand ha, minus 9%; Victoria 887 thousand ha, plus 4%; Western Australia 1.362 mln ha, minus 13%. Private acreage estimates are even lower.

Rainfall forecasts are favourable, average in Western Australia, slightly above normal in South Australia and much more than normal along the east coast. Therefore, crop forecasts should be looked at with caution, the analysts said.
