Brewing news USA, AL: SteeleHall Brewing Company coming to Main Street Trussville

The SteeleHall Brewing Company is coming to Main Street Trussville in the building of the former Slag Heap Brewing Company. SteeleHall Brewing Company will provide a family-friendly atmosphere for all who enjoy a relaxing environment, The Trussville Tribune reported on June 7.

The idea of SteeleHall Brewing Company came from c0-founders Eric Mitchell and Scott Worthington discussing what it would be like to start their own brewing company. Mitchell and Worthington met in 2014 while working at Heist Brewing in North Carolina, and as the years went by, they began to plan the opening of their own brewing company.

“We talked about it and always kind of knew in the back of our head this was something we wanted to do together, move back home per se and open our community brewery somewhere around here,” Mitchell said. “Trussville just happened to do its own little full blossom in that timeframe as well, and this door opened up for the building down in Trussville. So the opportunity somewhat presented itself at the perfect time. So it kind of wrote itself.”

The SteeleHall Brewing Company logo is an ode to the Alabama state flower, the camellia. It’s also symbolic of an SH to honor two of the founder’s wife’s maiden names. Mitchell and Worthington agreed this was their return home. Mitchell grew up in Clay before attending Auburn University and heading to North Carolina to follow their careers. Before also attending Auburn University and moving to North Carolina, Worthington grew up in the Birmingham area.

This was not a spur-of-the-moment idea; with Mitchell and Worthington’s extensive experience in the brewing world, they knew they could create something with a lasting impression.

Mitchell’s brewing career took off while working at Heist Brewing as a pilot brewer, but his impressive talent for creating tasty memorable recipes earned him a promotion in six months.

“I took over when I was 24 years old,” Mitchell said. “I was a greenhorn, I basically knew nothing other than how to homebrew, and luckily I had my buddy, Josh, from Monday Night Brewing to show me the ropes and lead me to water.”

Worthington is no stranger to creating unique brews, either. He started his journey at Auburn University, where he was one of 14 students in the Inaugural Brewing Science Program. He then went on to take over Heist Brewing when Mitchell went to head up Pinehurst Brewing before he and Mitchell returned home to the Birmingham area to open SteeleHall Brewing Company.

“I think Scott and I accomplished some really cool things on both like the world scale and US soil base, like just accomplishments that we had, such as highest rated beers in North Carolina still to this day and stuff like that,” Mitchell said. “We’re very proud of that and want to let people know that we’ve done this we’re not just hometown guys that happened to move back and decided to open a brewery.”

It’s not just the brews that will be changing, but the entire outlook on the building will provide a lighter and more inviting environment in the Trussville area.

“As far as physically, we’re gonna completely change the outlook of the building and make it more welcoming and just more open and bright,” Mitchell said. “It will be a family-friendly, very welcoming space. As far as beer, we focused heavily on hazy IPAs when we were in North Carolina, and it served us well. So we want to bring some of our style and our touch to that style, to Birmingham.”

Mitchell and Worthington have brewed various styles over the years together, “probably hundreds and hundreds of recipes.”

“We’ve worked together and worked well together for years past, I think we’re gonna bring a new touch to some of the old styles,” Mitchell said.

Worthington explained that he and Mitchell are working on finalizing plans for SteeleHall Brewing Company.

“We are not planning on doing food right now,” Worthington said. “That’s something we can tackle later. If we decide that’s an element we need to add or if that’s something we can kind of get around.”

He also added they are working on options for food trucks and live entertainment. Mitchell said they have an idea for food for people, so they’re “working on something on that end.”

“We should have a small stage where we can have some live music,” Worthington said. “But as far as any detailed events, we really don’t know yet.”

Both agreed that seeing their dream take off is like a “pinch me” moment.

“Family is very important to us so that was a major factor in us wanting to move back home to open the brewery,” Worthington said. “We look forward to welcoming all in experiencing this lifelong dream with us.”

SteeleHall Brewing Company has not announced its official opening date, but they hope to be serving beers by the start of football season.
