Barley news EU & UK: Planet still favourite spring barley variety in Europe

France’s spring barley crop is forecast to reach 4.1 mln tonnes from 678 thousand ha this year, H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their early May report, however, taking into account the lack of precipitation, this forecast may soon change.

Planet barley variety is expected to account for 75% of the crop, Fantex for about 15%.

In Denmark, the spring barley crop is seen at around 3.1 mln tonnes with acreage at up to 520 thousand ha. Laureate barley is forecast to total 35% of the output, Planet 30%.

Spain’s production of spring barely is expected to be the highest in the EU, at 8.7 mln tonnes. The variety breakdown forecast is unavailable at this point of time.

Poland’s output is projected at 2.9 mln tonnes, again with no breakdown of leading varieties.

In Germany, the spring barley crop is seen at 1.7 mln tonnes with Planet accounting for 30% of it.

UK farmers are expected to harvest 3.8 mln tonnes of spring barley off 650 thousand ha, with Laureate accounting for 40% of the crop, Planet for 30%, and Diablo for 10%, the analysts said.
