Barley news Australia: Malting barley exports total 550 thousand tonnes in July-February 2021/22

After disappointing exports in January, Australia shipped 2.3 mln tonnes of barley in February, H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their May report.

Registered malting barley exports were only 39 thousand tonnes, of which 30 thousand to Mexico. However, registered feed barley shipments of 92 thousand tonnes to Mexico, 42 thousand to the Netherlands and 33 thousand to Canada were obviously not destined to feed markets, but to the malting industries.

During July-February 2021/22 Australia shipped 550 thousand tonnes of malting and 6.8 mln tonnes of feed barley. Split-up of feed barley exports includes 1.5 mln tonnes to Saudi Arabia, 1.17 mln tonnes to Japan, 450 thousand to the Philippines and, of course, zero to China.

The nation has done very well in developing new malting and feed barley markets since the Chinese import prohibition, and the firm world barley markets yielded better incomes to farmers than the former sales of malting barley to China. Chinese maltsters, on the other side, are missing Australian supplies badly, they now buy much FAQ and feed barley for reasons of price, but are nevertheless uncompetitive in world malt markets.
