World: Brewing world will have to cope with smaller malt supplies, analysts believe
Ukrainian malt exports were 75,000 tons in 2020, after three years of larger shipments – above 100,000 tonnes. The main destination was Brazil with 25,000 tonnes. It must be feared that almost no exports can take place in 2022/23; seaports are blocked and destroyed, H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their May report.
Russia exported a record 175,000 tonnes in 2020, of which 50,000 tonnes to Brazil. So far the pace of exports has almost been sustained. But customer preferences and sanctions on trade, shipments and payments may curtail the export program in 2022/23. War or peace will decide the degree of damage, the analysts said.
China shipped 400,000 tonnes in 2020, 100,000 less than in 2019. Virtually all exports went to their Asian neighbours. Without barley supplies from Australia, China must import malting barley from Europe and America. Canada performed well on their pre-harvest sales, but a large part of the Chinese demand was covered in Argentinean FAQ and French malting/FAQ/feed barley. The high cost makes China uncompetitive in most markets, the export volume risks to shrink in the second half of 2022 and early 2023.
Canada exported 515,000 tonnes in 2020, less than in all the years since 2015. Main (intra-group) destinations were the USA (280 thousand tonnes) and Mexico (80 thousand), but also 115,000 tonnes to its traditional customer Japan. After a bad crop failure in 2021 Canadian maltsters are faced with enormous price and quality problems; will barley harvested under poor conditions still germinate throughout the summer? Present weather makes early planting and an early crop in 2022 unlikely. Canada imports 90,000 tonnes of malting barley from Australia and Denmark, but the Japanese brewers insist on malt deliveries produced from Canadian barley. Estimates are that Canadian exports may not exceed 300,000 tonnes.
The U.S. shipped 335,000 tonnes in 2020, of which 315,000 tonnes to Mexico, 60,000 tonnes less than a year before. The 2021 crop failure necessitated barley imports from Denmark, France and Argentina. Nevertheless it looks like a lower malt production and smaller exports in 2022/23.
Conclusion: The brewing world will have to cope with smaller supplies, up to half a million tonnes seems possible, the H. M. Gauger GmbH analysts said.
