Barley news EU: Winter barley planting proceeding at good pace and under favouralbe weather conditions

Winter barley planting has proceeded at a good pace under very favourable weather and ahead of average progress for the last three years in the EU, RMI Analytics said in their latest report of the end of November.

French 6-row barley planting is complete with prime malting barley areas finished quite earlier. A small increase of about 2% in winter barley area is expected, supported by good conditions and strong prices.

Winter variety mis in France is shifting dramatically to KWS Faro with 65% share (up from about 45%) while Etincel drops to about 15% in retaining second place from a share perspective.

German maltsters and brewers are reportedly finding necessary barley coverage from crop 2021, relieving pressure on Central Europe supply chains.

The EU balance sheet is tight as the final crop results are known and as exports remain very strong. The combination of lower production from 2020 crop and high demand will deplete stock levels further in crop 2021, the analysts said.
