EU: Now is good moment to drop barley import tariff and abandon tariff rate quotas - analysts
In view of a serious shortfall of malting barley in the EU and the whole northern hemisphere, the EU Commission should consider dropping the barley import tariff to zero and abandon the tariff rate quotas till the end of the crop year, H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their latest report published earlier in October.
Anyway, it looks wrong to still have the historical high protection in form of fixed barley and malt tariffs, while there are flexible tariffs for most other grains, so that wheat and maize are being imported levy free since years. Now would be a good moment to correct the system, the analysts said.
