Brewing news Belgium: Number of breweries reaches 400

The number of breweries in Belgium is constantly increasing, passing from 133 in 2010 to 400 in 2021, according to the Belgian association of beer lovers Zythos, Le Soir reported on September 30.

To be recognized as a brewery, the facility has to have brewing equipment meeting all official standards, having a legal status, and all necessary permits.

The DrinkDrink brewery in Brussels became the nation’s 400th brewery this week, the association reported.

According to the 2020 report by the Belgian Brewers Association (Brasseurs Belges), there were 379 breweries in the country last year, brewing more than 1,500 brands. The nation’s beer sector employs directly and indirectly more than 50,000 people. More than 70% of all Belgium’s beer was destined for export last year, the trade body reported.
