Barley news World: Barley production, S&D balance forecast reduced

Global barley production forecast is reduced to 153.8 mln tonnes in RMI Analytics’ August report, down 1 mln tonnes as compared to July and about 5 mln tonnes less than in 2020.

The current strong demand environment, the overall drop in production and related reduction in selectable malting barley dramatically tighten the global barley supply and demand balance sheet.

Given the severity of the weather anomalies, there will be a need for barley and malt quality parameters to be reviewed in relation to the actual crop quality achieved, the analysts said.

Industrial (malting) demand continues to rebound from the pandemic, at a time when malting barley availability declines.

The RMI analysts forecast the world barley trade at 31 mln tonnes, below the USDA forecast of 33 mln tonnes, due to lower malting barley availability. In addition, the analysts believe China’s influence on total barley trade may decline as growing prices ration demand.
