Barley news World: Barley markets inactive in May with several tenders passed due to lack of offers

Barley markets were dull in May. Old crop supplies have become very tight in most markets. Several tenders have been passed, because of a lack of offers, H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their June report.

Buyers have to switch their interest to new crop supplies, at lower, but still high price levels. China booked corn and wheat in May, but abstained from buying barley. Saudi Arabia, the second largest barley buyer in the world, has passed its import trade to private channels; import tenders have been terminated.

Farmers in almost all producer countries are sitting on their crops. Also the agri-industries in the northern hemisphere are waiting patiently on the sidelines. Most irritating is the open position of brewers and maltsters, particularly in China. Too many industries are waiting for lower prices at harvest time.
