Barley news Australia: Barley crop could reach up to 13 mln tonnes, according to private estimates

ABARES’ latest Australian crop report forecasts the nation’s barley output in 2020/21 at 11.96 mln tonnes (including Tasmania), commercials rather believe in a crop of 13 mln tonnes, H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their December report.

In the record crop year 2016/17 Australia exported 9 mln tonnes of barley excl. malt. Since that year domestic feed consumption has increased from 2.5 to almost 5.0 mln tonnes.

This year winter crops and pastures had fully recovered and looked good, but early heat waves raise some doubt about the coming summer weather and the resulting feed basis. Nevertheless the barley export surplus will be huge, the analysts forecast. Australia will execute the largest part of the recent Saudi Arab procurement of 730,000 tonnes, and that is only the beginning of their export offensive in world markets.
