Black Sea: Barley crop estimated at up to 20.5 mln tonnes for Russia, 7.9 mln for Ukraine

Crop estimates vary much, but Russia fared better with good crops in all regions except the south and Siberia, while most of Ukraine was impacted by dry conditions in summer, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported earlier this month.

The drought continues in the Black Sea area, farmers waited vainly for rain and started to plant winter grains on dry soils. Moscow already mentioned the need of export restrictions, and private forecasts paint a black picture of the 2021 winter wheat crop.

UkrAgroConsult estimates Ukraine’s 2020 barley crop at 7.9 mln tonnes, versus 8.9 mln tonnes last year; export surplus at 4.3 mln tonnes (last year 5 mln). Exports from July till the 28th of September totalled 2.748 mln tonnes versus 2.904 mln tonnes at the same time last year.

Russia’s 2020 barley crop is estimated at 20.5 mln tonnes versus 19.5 mln tonnes; export surplus is forecast at 5.2 mln tonnes vs. 4.6 mln in 2019. Exports over July – 28 September were 1.586 mln tonnes (1.086 mln last year).
