UK: Barley crop estimated at up to 8.1 mln tonnes
Coceral barley crop estimates for the UK are: winter 2.4 mln tonnes, spring barley 4.6 mln tonnes, H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their October report.
English estimates are much higher, total up to 8.1 mln tonnes.
Yields were extremely low for winter barley.
England reports variable qualities incl. high proteins, everywhere from south to north. Scotland, on the other hand, harvested a late, but very good quality crop with the low proteins needed by the distilling industries.
Selection for malting: winter barley 150 thousand tonnes, spring barley in England 1.1, in Scotland 1.0 mln tonnes. Export surplus of malting barley is negligible.
