Brewing news USA, CA: Wild Parrot Brewing Company setting up new location in Pasadena

Pasadena residents John and Kirsten Jackson, owners of Wild Parrot Brewing Company, have announced they’re setting up a new location on East Colorado Blvd., and will share a renovated space with popular local hangout, Rosebud Coffee, Pasadena Now reported on May 18.

“Our years-long search for a brewery location has ended and we are extremely excited to announce that we will be making our home at 2304 E. Colorado Blvd.,” the Jacksons said in a post at www.wildparrotbrewing.com. “Our mission is to create a distinct, local brand that is respected equally for our great beer and relationship with our community and customers.”

Pasadena’s Hearing Officer will hear the application for a Conditional Use Permit in a public hearing Wednesday, May 20, via Zoom and telephone.

According to the Hearing Officer agenda, the Jacksons want the city’s permission to establish an Industry Restricted, Small Scale land use for the site, allow the on- and off-site sale and consumption of limited alcohol, and allow extended hours of operation.

Once established, the business will be called “Wild Parrot,” where the owners will make beer and run a tasting room within a 3,177 square-foot tenant space. Rosebud Coffee, the existing tenant, will remain and share the space.

Proposed hours of operation are 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday to Thursday, and from 7 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Wild Parrot plans to operate under a non-retail Type 23 (Small Beer Manufacturer) Alcoholic Beverage Control license, according to the agenda.

The Jacksons named their company, and the proposed brewery, after wild parrots that are seasonally abundant in Pasadena and surrounding areas. The birds, of the red-crowned parrot variety, are believed to have escaped from the pet trade and have adapted to living in cities in California and Texas.

A popular theory is that the parrots now frequently making noise are the offspring of birds set free from the large pet emporium at Simpson’s Garden Town on E. Colorado Blvd., which burned down in 1959.

Bird watching societies say there might be as many as 3,000 red-crowned parrots in California, with about two-thirds of them residing in the San Gabriel Valley. About 1,000 are in Pasadena and South Pasadena, according to the Natural History Museum of L.A. County.

According to plans submitted to the City, Wild Parrot and Rosebud Coffee would operate separate service counters while sharing a common seating area, restrooms, and kitchen/prep facilities. Customer seating will be toward the front of the tenant space adjacent to Colorado Blvd.

A brewing pad with fermenters and other associated brewing equipment will be on the east side of the tenant space, visible to patrons occupying the seating area.

The Jacksons say they plan to produce about nine barrels of beer per week, with an initial annual production of approximately 450 barrels. Sale of alcohol for on-site consumption would take place within the seating/tasting area.
