Brewing news USA, MI: ByGeorge Brewing Company softly opens in Munising

By George, another brewery has made its way to the Upper Peninsula!

This one is called ByGeorge Brewing Company, and it's located right in the heart of downtown Munising, UpperMichigansSource.com reported on February 6.

"I'm still working, doing some construction here and there during the day, but yeah it's been awesome finally getting to stand behind the bar and see people with smiles on their faces," says partner and brewer, Matthew Johnson.

Located on E Superior Street, ByGeorge had a soft opening over the weekend, but it was far from being soft.

"It was pretty overwhelming, we were definitely humbled by the turnout that we had from local support, family friends, contractors that we've had," says Johnson.

"It's been great, wonderful, so positive. It's a validation of the hard work. I can't believe actually the amount of outpouring of support we've had," says owner and head brewer, George Schultz.

Schultz and Johnson, both Munising natives, are the brains behind the operation. They're also the friendly faces you'll see upon entering.

"Matt and I go back over a decade. We met, ironically, through beer," says Schultz.

It all began from Schultz' passion for chemistry, and, of course, beer.

"So about 17 years ago, I tried home brewing. Obviously it stuck, so my chemistry background, my extensive brewing knowledge and brewing experience just kind of led us to this point," says Schultz.

Currently they have seven beers available, along with 3 wines and root beer. However, they have 14 taps and are planning on expanding soon.

All of the beer is made in house - the equipment is visible through a glass window behind the bar.

ByGeorge is currently open for business, but is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
