Finland: Brooklyn Lager was chosen Beer of the Year for 2006 in Helsinki
The Brooklyn brewery’s Brooklyn Lager was chosen Beer of the Year for 2006 at the 9th Helsinki Beer Festival held at the Cable Factory on 7-8 April 2006. Brooklyn Lager (5.2%) also took gold in the bottom fermented beer category, beers under 6%.
The colour of the awarded Brooklyn Lager is dark goldish amber; the flavour is characterised by an elegant hoppiness supported by maltiness. The specific gravity is impressive for a lager: 13% Plato. Caramel malt can be discerned in the aftertaste, and the finish conveys a brisk dry hoppiness.
The victorious Brooklyn Lager as well as the strongly aromatic East India Pale Ale (6.8%) made by the same brewery will supplement Sinebrychoff’s import beer selection beginning in June 2006.
Steve Hindy and Tom Potter founded the Manhattan-based Brooklyn Brewery in 1987. Hindy’s and Potter’s guiding principle was to bring decent beer back to New York. Since 1994, Brooklyn’s charismatic brewmaster Garret Oliver has done impressive work as an advocate of beer culture. Oliver has also published a book, The Brewmaster’s Table, in which he demonstrates how well beer goes with many kinds of foods – even better than wine!
