Barley news Australia: New malting barley to boost Western Australia’s exports

The Agriculture Minister Kim Chance launched a new malting barley with the potential to give Western Australian growers increased sales into export markets in China and Japan.The new barley, named Vlamingh, has distinct malting characteristics, which meet the demands of discerning domestic and international malting markets, Seedquest announced on March16.

Speaking after the variety launch at Fremantle's maritime museum, GRDC Western Panel Chairman and Hyden grower, Dale Baker said Vlamingh would help Western Australia consolidate its position as the major barley producing state, accounting for one third of the national crop in 2004/05.
