Barley news Canada: Barley planted area, production forecast to drop in 2024

With barley planted area in Canada down up to 10% (and USA down similarly), crop 2024 is forecast at 8.6 mln tonnes, RMI Analytics said in their late March report.

Dry conditions persist, and this dryness includes areas in the US reliant upon irrigation water for major crops, including malting barley.

Canada barley exports are expected to rebound slightly, including the US and Mexico, but be below crop 2022 levels (now that Australia has retaken top supply into China).

Canada barley export prices are unchanged since early March, in a quiet market. Maltsters are not interested in selling crop 2023 barley. Domestic feed barley prices are up, as the busy spring planting period nears.
