Barley news North America: Barley crop quality overall very good in Canada

Barley crop 2022 quality is overall very good in Canada: proteins averaged 12.3% (normal), germination 99%, and test weight 66.7kg/hl (at 10-year average), RMI Analytics said in their first report this year.

Copeland and Synergy are the leading malting varieties, with Metcalfe dropping off the approved list.

RMI Analytics’ initial crop estimates for Canada and the US look for steady to slightly higher production versus crop 2022.

Chinese exports and strong domestic feed demand keep Canadian ending stocks at low levels, while the US stock levels return to normal levels after 2021’s drought.

Extremely cold temperatures hit western Canada and the US Northern plains which slows logistics (trucks and rail) execution. These colder temperatures are associated with less moisture (e.g. snow), and there remains a continued need for soil moisture replenishment before spring planting begins (May 2023).

Canadian barley prices are unchanged as the trade is very busy executing exports, which are at a near record pace for wheat and barley. Nearly 90% of November barley shipments were for China, Canada being 60% of China’s imports (530 thousand tonnnes in November 2022).

Domestic feed barley prices are mostly unchanged at CAD440/tonne delivered Lethbridge, Alberta. US corn delivers at nearly CAD20/tonne discount, making corn a major proportion of the feed ration. Feeders are getting covered for 2023 needs, which may lead to weakness in feed barley prices.
