Brewing news Brazil: Number of breweries up 12% in 2021

The number of breweries in Brazil increased by 12% in 2021 as compared to 2020, the latest edition of Anuario da Cerveja showed.

As of the end of last year, 1,549 breweries were active in the country versus 1,383 in 2020 and only 40 breweries in 2000.

200 new brewing companies launched in Brazil last year, whereas 34 shut down.

South and south-east of Brazil are home to the highest number of breweries (85.8%) with the state of Sao Paulo boasting of 340 establishments, the report showed.

Brazil’s beer exports increased last year to more than USD131.5 mln in value. 99% of Brazilian beer exports are destined to other South America nations, with Paraguay being the leading destination.

Beer imports amounted to USD15 mln showing a decrease in consumption of foreign brands which is explained by an increase in domestic beer offer.

Despite the market being dominated by the three industrial giants Ambev, Heineken, and Petropolis, the report notes the expansion of the craft beer sector last year.
