Barley news EU: Barley crop forecast to reach 51.531 mln tonnes in 2022/23

EU Commission’s barley supply and demand estimate of July 28 forecasts the EU-27’s barley crop at 51.531 mln tonnes in 2022/23, down from 51.973 mln tonnes in 2021/22 and 53.957 mln tonnes in 2020/21, H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their August report.

Imports are forecast at 1 mln tonnes (vs. 0.95 mln last season and 1.249 mln in 2020/21), which brings the domestic barley consumption forecast to 42.504 mln tonnes this season – compared to 42.505 mln tonnes in 2021/22 and 44.417 mln tonnes in 2020/21.

Exports including malt are seen at 9.859 mln tonnes (10.2 mln in 2021/22, 10.646 mln tonnes in 2020/21), and ending stocks are expected to total 4.907 mln tonnes (4.739 and 4.526 mln tonnes, respectively).

The new grain year started with the usual EU statistics problems. The Commission registered barley exports of 585 thousand tonnes in July, including 117 thousand tonnes from France. French ports, however, reported shipments of 353 thousand tonnes and line-ups of further 183 thousand tonnes.
