Brewing news USA, TX: Frost Town Brewing to open its doors to public this week

Frost Town Brewing, the latest brewery to hit Houston's vibrant beer scene, will open its doors to the public this week in a northeastern nook of downtown, Chron reported on June 27.

The venue has been almost three years in the making. Frost Town occupies the same footprint as the old diesel engine repair shop that had stood there since the 1970s. Due to structural issues, the team opted for a new buildout for the brewery. Demolition began at the end of 2019, and after a long wait, Frost Town will finally debut in a soft opening on June 30 and a grand opening on July 16.

There's no shortage of space in which to sip your beer at Frost Town Brewing, which spans about 9,000 square feet inside and more than 8,000 outside. The indoor space is split evenly between the production side of the brewery and its customer-facing portion, but there's a mezzanine in the latter that adds even more beer-drinking room.

Before pivoting to beer, Orlando, Fla., native Hannah Schaible was a professional basketball player, notably for SISU in Denmark and the Newcastle Eagles in the U.K. Her partner in life and business, John Sorensen, was a basketball coach at the college and professional level.

Sorensen grew up in the Memorial area and met Frost Town's third partner, West University native Kyle Tennyson, in high school. Together, they helm the beer-making side of the business, while Schaible is the creative director.

Schaible says Frost Town specializes in sessionable beers. "Beers that you can have sitting out on the porch even though it's hot out," she said. She adds that the brewery will not be chasing trends. Rather, Frost Town brews will be traditional in style, but far from boring, with bold flavors coming from recipes rooted in the history of beer-making.

The team is proud of its lagers and German styles in particular. They will always have IPAs on tap, because you have to, she says; the Hop Grade IPA will be on year-round, while other styles may rotate. A pale ale called Verano—meaning "summer" in Spanish—will turn into a different version every season. Frost Town will also have at least one darker beer at all times, opening with the Rhine Bier Altbier, which is dark in color but still very refreshing on the palate.
