UK: Barley crop condition reported as good to-date
English spring barley plantings are 440 to 460 thousand ha, the crop forecast is 2.5 to 2.7 mln tonnes, of which 1.5 mln tonnes of malting barley, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported earlier this month.
Scotland reports 230 - 250 thousand ha of spring barley, a possible production of up to 1.4 – 1.5 mln tonnes, of which 1.1 mln for malting and distilling.
Winter barley is planted on 415 thousand ha in the UK; no more than 300 thousand tonnes are usually used for malting.
Crop conditions are reported good to-date, an export surplus of 750 thousand tonnes seems possible. Irrespective of Brexit, UK barley finds a good market with the maltings along the North Sea coast, the analysts said.
